HMS LIVERPOOL'S
VISIT TO SHANGHAI MAY 2003
|
| A LIVERPOOL
- SHANGHAI SISTER CITY EVENT |
| |
LIVERPOOL DAY ON HMS
LIVERPOOL (1):
SISTER CITY LUNCHEON |
| |
| On the invitation of Chinalink,
also in the name of Liverpool City Council and Liverpool Chamber of
Commerce, thirty Shanghai government's seniors officers attended a
luncheon reception on board the HMS Liverpool on Monday, 26th May
2003, hosted by Paul Sizeland on behalf of the British Government
and Dr. Kegang Wu on behalf of Liverpool. |
| The senior officers from Shanghai include
Director General of Shanghai Foreign Affairs Office, Mr. Yang Guoqiang;
Vice Director General Ms Wu Jin Lan; Vice-president of CCPIT Shanghai
Mr. Song Fansheng and Vice-Chairman of Shanghai Construction & Management
Commissions Mr. Huang Jian Zhi. Most attended have been the key players
in Shanghai responsible for the sister city activities. |
 |
| |
| In his speech (attached), Paul Sizeland, who is leaving
his Shanghai post in early June, stated that "the development of the
relationship between Liverpool and Shanghai has been one of the highlights
of my time here. I am delighted to have been able to make a small
contribution to its success." |
| Dr. Kegang Wu spoke to welcome all VIP guests in the
name of the City and thanked them for the valuable contribution in
the last few years helping the sister city links. |
| Shanghai Government was particularly delighted that
such high profile sister city event is arranged at a time China is
experiencing the difficulties caused by the SARS outbreak. The Liverpool
Day is probably the most significant foreign visit to Shanghai since
the SARS outbreak. The Shanghai VIPs have been taken in small groups
for a tour of the Navy vessel. |
| An official letter from the Liverpool Lord Mayor, Cllr.
Ron Gould, addressing to the Shanghai Mayor, Mr. Han Zheng, has been
brought to Shanghai by Kegang Wu who requested Commanding Officer
Martin Ewence to present it to Vice Mayor Jiang in a following meeting
at the presence of British Ambassador to China and the British Maritime
Force Commander. |
| |
| |
|
" It is particularly fitting
to be holding this event on board HMS Liverpool which is a very tangible
sign of the relationship, as the ship acts as a floating ambassador
for the city." " I like to pay tribute to Kegang as the architect
of this excellent model for sister-city relationship". |
| ---- Paul Sizeland, British
Consul General in Shanghai |
