Post-SARS China Market & the New
Mainland-Hong Kong Co-operation

Time: 2:40pm - 5:30pm, Wednesday 6th August 2003
Venue: Boardroom, 3rd Floor, One Old Hall Street, Liverpool

Guest Speakers:
Mr. Deng Boqing, Consul General of China in Manchester and
Andrew Leung, Director - General of Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office

Through ChinaLink, the China Business Club (UK) has had the privilege of Mr. Deng and Mr. Leung to speak at our seminar.

With the SARS gone, many of us are pondering about both the immediate impact and how it may affect the long term business opportunity for British companies. What is the consideration of Chinese government in the light of lessons learnt from the SARS incident? What will be the international trade and investment policies of the newly formed central government? Consul Deng in his post as the new Consul General for the Manchester Consulate, appointed in November 2003, gave a brief on the above. He also informed on the services of the Chinese Consulate General.

The Mainland - Hong Kong Closer Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), signed in Hong Kong on 29 June 2003 in the presence of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Hong Kong Chief Executive Mr Tung Chee Hwa, will revolutionise the close co-operation between the China Mainland and Hong Kong and has been hailed as a major boost for the Hong Kong economy. Hong Kong has remained a favourite location for many British companies to do business since the hand over and Mr Leung briefed on this new agreement and discussed the implications of the agreement. He will provide update on the Hong Kong economy and will be able to answer questions on the opportunities in southern China's Pearl River Delta --- a region of global economic importance as a production basin and emerging market.

Details of ChinaLink's October mission (Hong Kong and Guangzhou) and November mission (Shanghai, Guangzhou and Kunming) were available together with other project details.
