| Chinese folk art reflects the long history of popular customs
and traditions in Chinese culture. It may not be as imposing or elegant
as imperial art, but the simple crafts well represent the mood and mind-sets
of the Chinese. Chinese ancestors depended on the land for their livelihood;
their artistic creations were also inseparable from the earth. |

| Paper Cutting |
| Paper-cutting is one of the most popular and characteristic
Chinese folk arts. It takes a paper as the material and a scissor or engraving
knife as the only tool. The tradition can be traced back to the 6th century.
Paper-cuts are all hand-made and mainly used as decorations and patterns.

| Chinese Kite |
| Kite making is a traditional Chinese handicraft. The earliest
kite appeared 2300 years ago. Kite making spread to various counties in
the world as time went on. Kite made in Tianjin, Beijing and Weifang are
most well known among many styles. With large variety in shapes, Beijing
kites, which are made of paper or silk and painted totally by hand, have
a good market reputation home and abroad. The smallest can be as small as
the palm of your hand. |

| Dough Sculpturing |
| Chinese dough sculpturing is a 2000 year old profession. Dough
sculptures were once mostly used for sacrificial ceremonies, weddings, birthday
celebrations, funerals and some Chinese lunar festivals. They were very
popular in northern China where wheat is planted. With flour, water, colouring
and sculpture tools, the artists create animals, traditional Chinese modern
cartoon characters and other delightful miniatures. |
