A team of 10 Senior Executives and Officers from Guangzhou BOFTEC
(Bureau for Foreign Trade & Economic Cooperation), a governmental
department responsible for policy regulations, administration and
support to foreign business and companies in Guangzhou, is visiting
the UK and will be holding a seminar to bring British companies
in biotech and pharmaceutical sectors up-to-date opportunities of
the sectors in Guangzhou. The delegation is led by BOFTEC's Deputy
Director General, Sun Lei and also includes a senior officer from
the Guangzhou Food & Drug Administration, Deputy Director General
Qiu Yue Mei.

En route to BIO 2006 (USA) the delegation is making a special stop
in the UK to discuss with British companies in the sectors. They
will bring with them information, presentations on sector development
& project briefings in the biotech and pharmaceutical industries
of Southern China.They are the experts in policy, legal and administrative
procedures of setting up foreign & joint ventures of biotech & pharmaceutical
business in China. They will explain in detail on where and how
British companies can be involved in capitalising the market potential.
A CD which covers a wide range of industrial, commercial, policy,
regulatory documents will be freely available at the seminar. Information
of the sectors in Guangzhou such as list of key drug manufacturers
& biotech companies, list of R&D companies, biotech & drug industrial
parks, guidelines and list for preferred project areas, IPR legal
and regulatory documents, GMP certification legal and admin procedures,
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and many more. Contents of the
CD available on request.
Growth rates of China's pharmaceutical and biotech sector are expected
to remain at 10-15 percent during the next five years and new drug
development, including genetic engineering, is on the rise. Currently
valued at over $20 billion, China is expected to become the fifth
largest drug market in the world by 2010. Foreign drug companies
have already made their mark in China, establishing manufacturing,
R&D and marketing subsidiaries. Companies like AstraZenecca, Boehringer
Ingelheim, Novartis and GlaxoSmithKline are positioned to see handsome
profits from their China operations.
