The Government has announced this week that many of the existing
immigration entry categories will be replaced globally from next
Monday, 30th June 2008 by a new points-based system.
The new system will be substantially different to the old, particularly
in areas where employers are now regarded as sponsors and have
new associated responsibilities. Employers are also legally liable
for employing staff who do not have the right to work in the UK,
either knowingly or unknowingly and may face fines of up to £10,000
as well as being "named and shamed" by the Home Office.
ChinaLink has invited Alastair Woodward, Account Manager of the
Sponsor Management Unit, UK Border Agency (Northwest Region) and
his team to discuss the details of the new schemes and how they
will affect employers in various sectors of the business community.
Under the new rules, the Tier 1 categories of General, Entrepreneur,
Investor and Post Study Work will come into effect, replacing
the following existing schemes: Investors; Business People; the
Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP); Innovators; the International
Graduates Scheme; Fresh Talent: Working in Scotland Scheme; Self-employed
Lawyers and Writers; and Writers, Composers & Artists.
Who should attend:
" Business owners, managers and human resource professionals
who will have the new legal responsibilty to verify the immigration
status of their staff
" Inward investment agencies working with foreign investors.
" Employers who need to recruit globally and may need to employ
non-EU workers
" Businesses who have overseas operations involving international
travel
" Higher and further educational and training institutes
" Professional services handling work permits and overseas recruitment
of immigrants
Dr. Kegang Wu, Director and Managing Consultant of ChinaLink,
said, "12 months ago, we organised a similar seminar with
UKvisa and UK Border Agency to consult the international business
community in the Northwest on the new scheme. It was very popular
with the 80 businesses who took part. Now the system has taken
effect, it becomes urgent for businesses to understand how it
works."
