December 2001: Director's Column - A memberable year for China

Director's colume: A memberable year for China
Year 2001 it is worth to commemorate for china and overseas Chinese. Much happened recently will further promote China to reform its economy and open its door to the world and also further increase China's influence in the world. After 15 years of negotiation, China finally completed the negotiation and agreed the documents regarding China's membership of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and it will become a member of WTO in November this year. China's economic reform needs the world and the world trade also needs China's rapidly growing economy. China joins WTO will promote its trade and investment and enhance the exchange in many areas between Britain and China. The world economy will be affected by China's economy and vice versa. It might be that China will become the number nine into Industry Countries summit.
Two years ago, Liverpool established ChinaLink based at Liverpool Chamber of Commence & Industry and twinned with Shanghai, it has become a major city in Sino-Britain trade. ChinaLink has become a major UK-China trade service provider and has led twice British Hi-tech. delegations with the Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott and the Ministry of Science and Technology, Lord Sainsbury in conjunction with Trade Partners UK to China and organised activities for the twinning between Liverpool and Shanghai. After China becomes a member of WTO, I believe that ChinaLink and China Office of Liverpool City Council will play more important role. From ChinaLink's prospective, I feel that it is an exciting time.

Shanghai, its position as a leading economic city for the 21stcentury in China was much recongnised worldwide through Apec. Liverpool, as Shanghai's twinned city in Britain, shall take an advantage and make full use of the relationship to promote its intentional status.
