The second annual China Hi-Tech Fair (CHTF) will be held this October in Shenzhen, the emerging hi-tech capital of China, located next to Hong Kong. Sponsored by the Chinese ministries of Foreign Trade, Information Industries and Science, this is China's premier showcase for Hi-Tech products and technological achievements.
The event is designed to promote the exchange and transfer of technology, accelerate the trading of Hi-Tech products, exhibitors and visitors from all over the world. It is the ideal exhibiting place for British companies relevant interested or involved in the hi-tech industris.
The first CHTF was held in October 1999. The theme of the Fair was 'The International Computer, Telecommunications, and Networking Products Fair'. It was officially opened by Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji and, over its 5 day duration, attracted more than 300,000 visitors. A total of 2,860 companies and organisations were represented at the Fair, including over 400 exhibitors from 26 countries outside China.
Chinese exhibitors included representatives from State-owned enterprises, universities, scientific research institutions and the large and dynamic private enterprises. Amongst the foreign names at the Fair were major hi-tech multinationals such as Microsoft, Lucent, IBM, Compaq, Sanyo, Ericsson, Dell, Epson and Nokia. Many of these companies are already investors in Shenzhen.
The Fair organisers claim that during and immediately following the Fair, business deals made totalled nearly £ÚÚÚà ÚÚà ÚÚà ÚÚà ÚÚà ÚÚà ÚÚà ðÚØ ÚÚà ÚÚà ÚÚà -ÚÚà ÚÚà ÚÚà ÚÚà ÚÚà ÚÚà ÚÚà ÚÚà èÚÐ ÚÚà ÚÚà ÚÚà ØÚÈ ÚÚà -X/íÚÀ ÚÚà £ÚÚÚà ÚÚà ÐÚ¸ ÚÚà ðÚØ ÚÚà ÚÚà ÚÚà ÚÚà àÚ° ÚÚà èÚÐ ÚÚà ÚÚà ÈÚ¨ ÚÚà àÚ° -ÚÚà ÚÚà ÚÚà ÚÚà ÚÚà ÚÚà ÚÚà ÚÚà èÚÐ ÚÚà ÚÚà ÚÚà ØÚÈ ÚÚà -P/ 4.3 billion for 1,459 business transactions. In parallel with the Fair, the Shenzhen Government hosted a Hi-Tech Forum consisting of a programme of lectures, seminars and conferences held in venues adjacent to the Hi-Tech Fair. The more than 30 speakers included three Nobel Prize winners, senior academics, CEOs and representatives from major multi-national companies such as IBM, Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch, Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission, NASDAQ, etc.
This year the China Hi-Tech Fair 2000 will be held from 11 - 17 October at the newly enlarged and purpose built Hi-Tech Fair Exhibition Centre in Shenzhen (53,000 sq metres). The event consists of a number of sub-themes and exhibitions:
Exhibition of Technological Achievements
This is aimed at Chinese companies and research organisations seeking
domestic or foreign partners to develop and market their ideas. Overseas
companies can also exhibit their latest products or processes. This is
the place for venture capital companies and other financial companies
interested in the China hi-tech market. Many of the projects on offer
are officially backed by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology.
ComNet Shenzhen 2000
This is the main exhibition for information and communications technology,
E-commerce, software, digital technology etc.
Biotech 2000
Exhibition of biotechnology products and equipment, bioinformatics and
bioengineering etc.
New Materials 2000
Exhibition covering electronic materials, new construction materials,
environmentally protective and energy-saving materials, macromolecule
materials, crystal materials etc.
But ultimately, whatever it's specialisation, any company or institution with an interest in Hi-Tech and related matters (including financial investment in the sector) is welcome to participate. The organisers promise to be flexible about where exhibitors are located - particularly where companies from one country wish to be grouped together.
As in 1999, there will also be another Hi-Tech Forum for high-level speakers from home and abroad. This year's topics include: IT in the 21st Century, Venture Capital in Hi-Tech Industry, Biotech in the 21st Century. According to the organisers, official delegations are already organised from Germany, Italy, Canada, Australia, Austria and Belgium.

BRITISH CONSULATE-GENERAL 25 May 2000 CHINA HI-TECH FAIR, SHENZHEN, 11-17 OCTOBER I am writing to introduce to you the China Hi-Tech Fair, to be held in Shenzhen City, South China, this autumn. This event is China's premier international exhibition and trade fair for the high technology sector, and is organised by a number of central government ministries. Its location in Shenzhen (bordering Hong Kong) reflects that city's emerging status as the major centre of hi-tech development in China. The Fair provides an excellent opportunity to see just how rapidly China's hi-tech sector is developing. It is an ideal way to make Chinese contacts in that sector, and for British organisations to promote their own expertise, whether in research, design, production, management or financing. Many multi-national companies are represented, and the Shenzhen authorities are keen to see a bigger British presence there this year. The enclosed note sets out some of the main facts about the Fair, and provides contact details in Shenzhen for organisations or individuals interested in participating. As the Government body responsible for promoting UK trade and investment promotion in South-East China, the British Consulate-General Guangzhou is also ready to provide advice to British companies, organisations and individuals interested in the Fair. Our contact details are included in the note. We hope we will see many of you there. Yours sincerely, Stephen Lillie |
A few statistics on Shenzhen and its Hi-Tech and electronics industry highlight the importance of Shenzhen within the China Hi-Tech industry. All these figures are for 1998, the latest published figures available.
Shenzhen was established as a Special Economic Zone in 1980. Since then it has grown from a small fishing village to become a city of 4 million residents, with annual average growth in excess of 30% and the highest per capita income in China. It is one of the most outward-looking cities in China, and accounts for one seventh of the country's exports. It has excellent road, air and port facilities, with convenient access to neighbouring Hong Kong.
In recent years Shenzhen has started to re-orient itself as the new Hi-Tech centre of China. It enjoys backing from central government for this, as evidenced by the decision to locate the annual China Hi-Tech Fair there. Key Hi-Tech statistics for 1998 include:
In 1998, Shenzhen manufactured the following totals:
