The Courses
The College
International House Newcastle, the third international House school in
the UK, was opened in 1978 by its currently director Gill Mitchell. The
Newcastle school is a small and friendly school with 50-80 students, yet
it offers English courses at all levels. The School's facilities include
a video room and self-access computer room.
The school is in the centre of the city, close by St. James' Park, the
home of Newcastle United Football Club. It is surrounded by attractive
shops, pubs, restaurants, sports and leisure facilities and all forms
of public transport.
Teaching Methods
The teachers in International House Newcastle understand that different
people learn languages in different ways, so they use a wide variety of
modern approaches and techniques to meet students' individual needs and
aims.
The courses will help students understand written and spoken English
more readily, raise the standards of their own written English and help
them speak the language with great confidence and fluency.
International House teachers are among the most highly qualified and
respected in the teaching profession. They have been specially trained
and are very experienced. They are supported by a strong team of educational
administrators.
Accommodation
The School arranges home-stay accommodation with bed, breakfast, evening
meal and lunch at weekends. Students have single rooms and they never
share the accommodation with a student of the same nationality unless
requested. All hosts live within easy access of the school. The average
travelling time from their homes to the school is about 10-15 minutes.
The hosts families would write to students to welcome them before they
arrive.
Self-catering accommodation is also available in the nearby YWCA flats.
Four students each have their own room and share a sitting-room, bathroom
and kitchen.
Social programme
There is a varied social and sports programme throughout the year including
theatre and cinema visits, jazz and folk evening, barbecues and pool nights.
As well as discos, Scottish country dancing proves very popular. Sports
include swimming, tennis, football and golf.
Excursions
During the summer months, excursions to Edinburgh, the Lake District
and York - all within easy travelling distances of Newcastle - are always
enjoyed. Durham and the Roman Wall are equally popular and nearer still
to the school.
