Liverpool Community College

Liverpool Community College was established in April 1991 by the amalgamation of four former further education colleges. The college is celebrating ten years and looking into the future with the opening of new buildings with all the latest state-of-the-art facilities. It also has an unbroken tradition back to the beginnings of universal education in the nineteenth century.

It is one of the largest colleges in the UK with around 20,000 students and more than 1,000 staff. We have six main centres, two recently opened, two refurbished and two due to be replaced in 2003 with buildings now under construction. Three main buildings are in the centre of Liverpool. Each centre has vocational subject specialisms as well as general education courses.

Our students are school leavers and adult learners from Liverpool, the rest of UK and abroad. We have a thriving English Language Unit where students from other countries learn English but which provides English Language support across all the courses for students whose first language is not English.

The curriculum spans all the designated areas:

  • The Arts - visual and performing arts, including photography, media and journalism
  • Hospitality and Catering
  • Business Studies
  • Health, Care and Child Studies
  • Construction
  • Science
  • Engineering
  • Languages
  • GCSE (22), A-levels (30) - preparation for higher education including Curriculum 2000
  • Teacher Education
  • Access to HE, for mature students
  • Professional Development
  • Beauty Therapies and Hairdressing
  • Information Technology specialisms (use of IT is part of every learning programme)
  • Leisure and Tourism
  • English
  • The college runs its own training salons, restaurant and bakery. Visits, field trips and opportunities to display work are built into all courses. The size of the college means that the choice of subjects and the way they can be combined is very large.

We have provision at all levels up to and including some higher education courses. Opportunities for progression are built into each level. All qualifications are nationally recognised and to industry standards. English as a Foreign Language courses are accredited by the British council. We have substantial links with the various vocational sectors both locally and nationally. Our links with local universities are excellent and we are an associate college of Liverpool John Moores University. Our students are able to use many of the social facilities for the universities. This is particularly attractive to students from abroad.

The government judged this college to have one of the best student support systems in the country. This includes educational advice and guidance before starting a course, financial advice, on-course support and preparation for the next step through careers guidance.

Although this is such a large college we have an excellent reputation for welcoming and looking after overseas students. The English Language Unit assists with all aspects for life in Liverpool including finding accommodation, often with host families. This is a friendly and relaxed place to study where students are expected to work hard and achieve their goals.

The city also has a long-established Chinese community and is renowned for welcoming visitors. It is currently undertaking a major regeneration programme and is an exciting place to live and study. Jung, described Liverpool as "the pool of life", we think it still applies.
