The Directorates
Adult Medicine Directorate
The department coped successfully with pressure on emergency beds, particularly
during the winter months. Between December and March, arrangements were
made to provide a low dependency ward as well as a discharge lounge.
These facilities were used by more than 1,000 patients and enabled the
directorate to free-up acute medical beds for new admissions. It also
meant that at times of severe pressure on beds, a number of medical patients
who were being admitted did not have to use surgical beds.
Anaesthetic Directorate
Staff on the day surgery unit and multi-disciplinary team are committed
to providing a quality, holistic approach to the needs of patients, their
families and carers.
Child Health Directorate
The medical staff within the unit was increased to meet new requirements.
Specialists were appointed to help children with mental health problems
and their families.
A high care room was developed to resuscitate and stabilise children,
thus prevent the waste of precious time after an accident or sudden illness
if the children are to be transferred.
Mental Health Directorate
A 6 million pound mental health unit was opened at the Royal Oldham Hospital
in 1998. It offers high quality mental health care and facilities, and
demonstrates the staff's commitment to developing modern mental health
services in the area.
Obstetrics & Gynaecology Directorate
The joining of the two wards into one ensured that more beds would more
available to patients. Exchange visits between the medical staff from
Oldham, Hungary and the Czech Republic have enabled those who take part
to look at how services in the different countries are led, managed and
organised.
Pathology Directorate
The directorate has undergone tremendous changed in recent years. A brand
new computer system and a pneumatic tubing system linking the laboratory
with most parts of the hospital have been installed, which means that
specimens from any clinic which need analysing arrive at the laboratory
within three minutes of being sent. Staff on the wards can call up test
results on the computer anywhere in the hospital.
Radiology Directorate
With the appointment of new consultants and the set up of a new Doppler
vascular service, the efficiency and the service have been greatly improved.
Surgical Directorate
An increasing number of patients continue to be treated by the surgical
directorate. A post of orthotic manager was created so that services which
were previously provided by external contractors can be offered by the
department.

Other Services
Support Services
All directorates have their own specific areas of care, but most rely
on support services offered either in the hospital or the community. They
include:
Community Dental Service, Speech and Language Therapy, Physiotherapy
Services, Volunteers, Case Note Tracking, Sterilisation and Disinfection
Unit, Audiology, Nutrition and Dietetic Services, Occupational Therapy
Community Services
The community nursing service aims to provide high quality nursing care
to patients within their own homes. Its development is part of the move
away from providing care within the hospital and, where possible, treating
people in the community. They include:
Acute Care Team - works to provide a swift response to patients
suffering from a medical illness who experienced a sudden worsening in
their condition. The patients were given intensive nursing at home with
full support from both community nursing and Social Services - preventing
what would otherwise have meant hospital admission. The service also provided
an opportunity to extend district nursing to 24 hour care.
Health Visiting Service - projects include Accident prevention
project, Profiling project, Development of self-appraisal pack, Service
Development Group and Health Promotion.
Aids Prevention Team - the nurse-led service has developed a protocol
set out for immunisation against Hepatitis B. People who are considered
to be at high risk of acquiring Hepatitis B are tested and immunised where
appropriate.
Specialist Respiratory Care Nurse
Continence Service - Service standards to ensure a quality service
have been set as the result of a clinical audit, and ongoing training
sessions in continence managmeent are held for both hospital and community
staff.
