Liverpool Meets Shanghai 200024 July - 31 August St George's Hall Liverpool
The lives and work of people in the two Sister Cities have been put on show with 200 photos collected from Shanghai and Liverpool to welcome the new millennium. Liverpool Meets Shanghai 2000 Photo Exhibition is sponored by ChinaLink, Liverpool Chamber of Commerce and Industry, with support from the Foreign Affairs Office of the Shanghai government. As an important event in the follow-up programme this year following last year's high profile twining in Shanghai, it was opened by the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Cllr. Edward Clein, on 21 July 2000 in the presence of 600 city dignitaries, many of them civic, business and community leaders of the city, as well as Chinese consular officials and local media. The photos are now on show in St. George Hall, Liverpool until the end of August. The photo show coincides with the annual opening of the building's famous Victorian tile floor during the summer months for visitors. Many visitors have expressed their amazament at seeing the pictures of Shanghai, many of which features the new skycrapers which are now a integral part of the city's skyline. It is expected that 20 thousands visitors will visit the photo show during its 5-week duration. The photos will then be transported to Shanghai for exhibition. The Shanghai Government has attached much importance to this event as one of the first cultural exchange events after the twinning. The Shanghai Information Office has been appointed to select the 100 photos from Shanghai and organise the exhibition in Shanghai. |
