Importance of Seminar
Seminar Timetable
On 15th November 1999 China and the United States struck a deal on the bilateral agreement for China’s World Trade Organisation membership. Hailed as a historical breakthrough after a thirteen-year negotiation, the agreement means the removal of the biggest obstacle to China’s membership of the WTO. The concessions agreed in the deal mean that China will open its door widely to the outside world and Chinese economy will be more in line with international practice. Once China become a WTO member in the next few months, the implications will be far-reaching and widespread, not only for those who are trading or investing in China, but also for those whose businesses may be affected by the global impact of the change in the Chinese market.
Apart from the financial, the IT, the retail, the telecommunication and service sector and others identified as the main beneficial sectors, what are the implications to the UK business community as a whole? What does it mean to individual businesses in the UK? The keynote speaker of this seminar, Mr. Peter Gysin, Manager of Asia Pacific Trade Policy Unit in the Department of Trade and Industry, is responsible for the policy issues of China trade in the department. Mr. Gysin has also been involved in identifying UK’s priorities in the process of EU - China WTO negotiation. His inside knowledge on the negotiation and his expertise on its implications for UK businesses will be something you can not afford to miss. Other speakers will explore the implications for specific sectors or provide practical advice on China trade services. The group discussion will allow all of us who are involved to exchange views.
